This was my first intentional painting using my new oil brushes in Procreate. I also have a personal connection with what I’ve chosen as the subject.

This painting is a still-life of an apple and oranges in a bowl. As I was sketching, I knew that I wanted fruit in a bowl, but I hadn’t originally considered what types I wanted. As I was sketching, I remembered the phrase about comparing apples and oranges. This phrase is used when people are trying to compare pros and cons of two different things.

When I was in public school, I was usually the odd one out. I had friends, but even there I felt different because all of my friends were sporty, but I was a drama kid. (This isn’t saying my friends were bad by the way, they were very good friends and I appreciate their friendship haha.) I felt like an apple among a lot of oranges.

That being said, there is nothing wrong with being an apple (or an orange.) We all have unique talents, personalities, and traits that make us who we are. I believe that is divinely intentional. We just need to learn to use them.

Anyway, back to the painting haha, I have always been intrigued by traditional art and the techniques involved. I am used to the techniques that come with digital art. Things like working in layers, easily being able to erase mistakes, and things like that. I decided that for this painting, I was going to be more traditional. So this entire painting is done on one layer, which is honestly crazy to me. As I painted, though, I discovered it was actually very nice and therapeutic to clean things up as I went and blend the colors together. As you watch the timelapse, you can see me go back over things repeatedly. In the 3464 strokes of this artwork, many of them were blending edges back into place. It was lots of fun.

So I hope you enjoy this painting, and this behind the scenes look about it.
